He showed Hendrix and Clapton and Stevie Ray what a guitar could be made to scream, and he carried Chicago's West Side blues out of the clubs and into everything that came afterward.
Now he is turning ninety, and he is spending part of that birthday on a stage by the water rather than at home accepting a plaque. Still playing. Still one of the most thrilling live performers anybody can go and see.
This is not a nostalgia booking. It is a chance to stand in a room with a living root of the whole thing while there is still time, the bay sitting behind the stage and the city lights wrapped around the rest of it.
