The quiet, stubborn belief that a song can still save you is a hope that only shows up after everything else has fallen apart. That is the whole heart of Begin Again, and before it ever reaches Broadway it is being born on a San Diego stage. Adapted from the beloved John Carney film, with an original score by Pat Monahan of Train, it is the story of two broken people who meet at the bottom and rebuild themselves one recording at a time — and the Old Globe cast it in part with real San Diego musicians who answered an open call to play in the onstage band. To see a pre-Broadway world premiere is to watch a thing decide what it will become, in the room, before the critics and the cast albums fix it forever.
