Two brothers, grown men, share a rented room and a wound neither will name — and their father, in a joke that was never funny, named them Lincoln and Booth. Suzan-Lori Parks won the Pulitzer for Topdog/Underdog because it takes that setup and turns it into one of the great American plays about brotherhood, history, and the hustle you cannot quit, a two-hander that tightens like a card trick until you cannot breathe. The Old Globe stages it in its intimate White Theatre, where a play this close to your face has nowhere to hide and neither do you. This is not a comfortable night; it is a necessary one, the kind of theater that leaves the room silent before the applause comes. Come if you want a play to actually cost you something.
