A Great Night in Hip Hop: Nas and The Roots with De La Soul -- Petco Park, San Diego

Three names that made hip-hop a religion walk onto a stage built for baseball, and the entire history of the genre shows up with them. Nas is the poet who turned Queensbridge into literature. The Roots are the band that proved hip-hop could be played live with instruments and lose nothing — if anything, gain everything. De La Soul brought joy and weirdness and Daisy Age optimism to a genre that did not know it needed any of it. Putting all three on one stage only happens when somebody decides the audience deserves more than a headliner and two openers. If you grew up on Illmatic or Things Fall Apart or 3 Feet High and Rising, you already know what the night means. Gallagher Square at Petco Park, 100 Park Blvd. August 27. It is not a concert so much as a living museum, except this one hits harder than anything behind glass.
