Some lineups read like a playlist. This one reads like a reunion for everybody who grew up wearing black in the California sun — the kids who found Bad Religion in a borrowed van, who got Morrissey off an older sibling's cassette, who fell into the Smashing Pumpkins during a summer that rearranged them.

Morrissey and the Pumpkins headline, but the undercard is where the real reunions happen: Simple Minds, Bad Religion, Adam Ant, The Psychedelic Furs, Soft Cell, The Damned, Gary Numan, Buzzcocks, Circle Jerks, Marky Ramone — over thirty-five artists across three oceanfront stages, the entire width of post-punk, darkwave, goth, new wave, and hardcore punk in a single day, treated correctly as one family that has always been in conversation.

The beach faces west, so by the time the headliners go on, the Pacific is doing the gold-then-purple thing. Sand for a venue floor. November air cool enough for the jacket you have been saving.
