What it was like
The smell hits you before the sign does — yakitori smoke drifting across the MLK Promenade, mixing with cold brew and the unmistakable energy of people who have been waiting eleven months for this exact week. Hulu Animayhem is back, and it has turned a stretch of the Gaslamp into a place where Futurama and King of the Hill exist in the same zip code, which is either a fever dream or the best thing Disney has done with Hulu since acquiring it. Planet Express is parked and open for business. Bobby Hill's Robata Chane has its own themed setup with a real menu — Fry's 100 Days of Cold Brew is an actual drink you can hold in your hand. There are interactive environments, Easter eggs scattered through the installation, and exclusive merchandise that will be gone before Saturday. The whole thing is free. No badge required. No line that wraps around Petco Park. Just walk in from the Gaslamp, eat yakitori that a cartoon character technically invented, and leave with a Bender pin you will never take off your backpack. Thursday through Sunday during Comic-Con week, July 23-26. MLK Promenade, Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego.
