What it was like
No setlist, no headliner, just whoever shows up with a horn and the nerve to sit in. Twice a month the San Diego Jazz Collective takes over a corner of Duck Foot's Miramar taproom and runs an open jam that swings between seasoned players trading fours and a nervous student taking their first-ever solo in front of a room of strangers who are all quietly rooting for them to land it. This is where the city's jazz actually lives, not in a concert hall with a dress code, but in a brewery on a Tuesday, a cheap pour in hand, everyone leaning in the moment somebody catches fire. The regulars know which nights the ringers come out to play. It's the kind of low, warm room where you accidentally fall in love with a genre you always assumed was for your parents. Bring the friend who's never heard improvisation happen live and up close. The jam runs on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday evenings at Duck Foot Brewing in Miramar.
