Padres Hello Kitty Night

Watching a grown adult in full business-casual clothes clutch a Sanrio jersey like it's the Stanley Cup is its own specific kind of joy. On Hello Kitty day the ballpark goes soft and pink and slightly unhinged, and the crowd fills with people who came for the bow, not the box score, Sanrio kids now grown up, moms and daughters in matching everything, a whole aesthetic that has nothing to do with baseball colliding warmly with a sleepy Wednesday day game. The Padres have run this a few times now, and the jersey resells for a small fortune, which is exactly why the true believers are in line well before first pitch. It's the rare afternoon at the park where the single cutest thing in the entire building is not the mascot. Bring the person whose whole personality is one small white cat. It happens at Petco Park on a Wednesday afternoon, Pirates in town.
