September in Pacific Beach smells like salt and sunscreen and the last good weekends before the marine layer wins. The Pacific Beach Oktoberfest drops a German beer hall onto the sand — or close enough — at 710 Beach Club, and for one Saturday evening the neighborhood that lives in board shorts puts on lederhosen and pretends this is Munich. The event runs from 4 PM to 10 PM on September 26 and features craft beer pours from local San Diego breweries alongside imported German lagers, bratwurst and pretzels from vendors who know their audience, and a DJ lineup that starts with oompah and ends wherever PB ends, which is usually louder than planned. What makes this one worth the walk down Garnet: it is the only Oktoberfest in San Diego that happens ON the beach. OB does theirs inland in October. El Cajon goes traditional at the German Club. La Mesa goes big. PB goes salty. The crowd skews young, the venue is open-air, and by 8 PM the line between Oktoberfest and a Pacific Beach Saturday night has dissolved completely. The Pacific Classic — the West Coast's signature Grade I stakes race — runs August 22, 2026 at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, with a $1.25 million purse and the best horses on the coast competing on one of the most beautiful tracks in American racing. Del Mar on Pacific Classic day is Del Mar at its best. The crowd dresses for it. The energy is different from a regular Saturday card — you feel it in the paddock before the first race, in the bar by the second, in the infield when the big horses walk to the gate. The Pacific Classic has been run here since 1991, and the names on the past performers list are names that matter in racing. Watching it in person, at that rail, in that track, is the experience. Del Mar opens at 12:30 PM for Pacific Classic day. Gates off Jimmy Durante Boulevard. Grandstand, turf club, and paddock box options — the infield is the move for the atmosphere, the turf club for the view. This is the one race day on the Del Mar calendar that sells completely differently from the rest of the meet.

There's one Saturday every summer when Del Mar stops being a pleasant day at the races and becomes the day — when the grandstand is full to the rails, the infield is packed, and more money moves through the windows than any other afternoon of the meet. The horses know it too; you can feel the difference in the paddock before the first race is even run. The Pacific Classic is Del Mar's version of the Derby — a mile and a quarter, the longest and richest race of the summer at a million dollars, drawing the best horses in training in North America. The names that have won it are the ones people still argue about: Zenyatta, Shared Belief, Accelerate. Standing at the rail when that field walks to the gate in the late-afternoon light, with the Grade I Torrey Pines already run earlier on the card, is the summer's whole meaning compressed into two minutes. The Pacific Pinball Expo in Alameda is one of the largest pinball collector and player events in the Western United States, drawing machines and enthusiasts from throughout California and beyond for a full weekend of free-play games, collector seminars, restoration workshops, and the competitive play that has made it a pilgrimage for the serious pinball community. The Pacific Pinball Museum operates year-round in Alameda as the primary public pinball collection on the West Coast, and the Expo amplifies that with additional machines collectors bring specifically for the event. The machine selection emphasizes historical breadth: electromechanicals from the 1950s and 60s sit alongside solid-state classics from the late 1970s through the Williams and Bally golden era of the 1990s, on through modern machines from Stern and Spooky. Restoration seminars by experienced collectors cover electrical troubleshooting, playfield restoration, and parts sourcing - practical knowledge the machine-owning community struggles to find in any other format. The Expo is held at a venue in or near Alameda, roughly 45 minutes north of San Jose and 20 minutes from Oakland, with shuttle service from BART typically organized during the event.
