About

You came for one author and you left carrying a reading list that will take you through winter. Nobody warned you about that — the way a book festival rearranges your plans for the next six months without asking.

The National Book Festival is the Library of Congress's annual gift to the country: a single day where the institution that holds 175 million items opens its arms and says, come talk to the people who write the things you cannot stop thinking about. The 26th edition takes over the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in DC on August 22, 2026 — free, all day, from 9am to 8pm.

The festival features conversations, readings, and signings across multiple stages organized by genre. Fiction, poetry, history, children's and young adult, graphic novels, science — every section runs simultaneously, which means you will spend the day making impossible choices between panels and loving every minute of it. This is the largest book festival in the United States, typically drawing more than 100,000 attendees to spend a full day surrounded by language.

What the regulars know: the signing lines form fast after each session ends. If there is an author you need to meet, position yourself near their stage exit fifteen minutes before the panel wraps. The children's section is not just for children — some of the best storytelling of the day happens there. And the Library of Congress pavilion is where you find the rare items from the collection that never make it online. The Poetry and Prose stage often has the shortest line and the most devastating readings.

The convention center layout rewards planning — download the map early and mark your must-sees, because the venue is large enough that moving between stages takes real time. Comfortable shoes are not optional.

Tickets are free but required — register early, they go. Livestreaming is available for those who cannot make the trip, but the real thing is in the room where someone reads the first paragraph of a book you did not know existed and you feel your posture change.

August 22, 2026. Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mt Vernon Pl NW, Washington, DC 20001. Doors at 8:30am.

Thrilljoy Block Party: Rock the Block — SDCC 2026
Today · Jul 25 InterContinental San Diego, 901 Ba…

The collectibles community has its own SDCC — and this is it. Thrilljoy's Rock the Block takes over the InterContinental San Diego on Saturday night of Comic-Con week with exclusive PIX Packs, carnival games, giveaways, and the kind of energy that only happens when people who obsess over the same things end up in the same room. When tickets launched, bots crashed the site. Thrilljoy had to manually cancel suspicious purchases and restore spots for real collectors. That is not a marketing story — that is the community telling you how badly they wanted in. The demand is the signal. Every attendee gets two drink tickets, food, and an exclusive Block Party PIX Pack with event-only items you cannot get anywhere else. This is the party where your shelf gets something nobody else's shelf has. The games and giveaways run all night. The venue is steps from the Convention Center — close enough to still feel the SDCC energy, far enough to breathe. Ages 5 and up. Doors at 6 PM, runs until 11 PM. Tickets are 165 dollars and limited to 2 per person — this is intentionally small. The InterContinental San Diego is at 901 Bayfront Ct, right on the waterfront. If you collect, this is your Saturday night.

10th Annual Lightsaber World Championships — SDCC Balboa Park 2026
Today · Jul 25 1549 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101

Every year during Comic-Con week, after the sun drops behind the eucalyptus trees and the fountain at Balboa Park catches the last of the light, dozens of people who own lightsabers they built themselves gather to find out who among them can actually fight with one. The Lightsaber World Championships is exactly what it sounds like and exactly as serious as you hope it is. This is the tenth year. What started as a handful of enthusiasts swinging illuminated polycarbonate tubes has evolved into a competitive circuit with choreographed duels, freestyle battles, and the kind of crowd energy that only happens when spectators realize they are watching something genuinely athletic wrapped in something genuinely nerdy. The fighters train. The choreography is real. The sabers crack when they connect. It is sport cosplay elevated to performance art, and the Balboa Park Fountain provides a backdrop that makes every duel look like a movie scene someone forgot to CGI. Free to attend as a spectator. Saturday, July 25, at sundown. No badge required. No reservation needed. Just walk through the park until you hear the hum and the cheering and the unmistakable sound of two people who have been practicing for months trying to disarm each other with weapons from a galaxy far, far away. Bring the kids. They will not forget it.

This is the after-party the anime community shares in group chats before the official schedule drops. Saturday night of SDCC week. 9 PM until late. Spin Night Club, 2028 Hancock St, San Diego, CA 92110.

Comic Tron - Comic Con After Party
Today · Jul 25 – Jul 26 1337 India Street, San Diego, CA 9…

The convention center goes dark at six, but the people inside it don't power down — they just need somewhere to put the charge. That's the whole reason a tribute act spent years building replica chromed helmets, a full-scale pyramid stage, and electro-luminescent suits that glow like the inside of a game grid. They believe the best hours of Comic-Con week aren't on the floor at all — they're after, when the badge comes off and the costume stays on and a room full of strangers turns out to be exactly your people. Little Italy's Music Box becomes a Tron sequence for one night: futuristic beats, glowing everything, an "Alive 2007"-style spectacle that treats Daft Punk like scripture. Cosplayers, ravers, and the SDCC crowd who refuse to call it a night all end up under the same lights. You do not need a Comic-Con badge to walk in. Doors at 8PM, the night ignites at 9PM, Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Music Box, 1337 India Street, San Diego, CA 92101. Tickets through Belly Up.

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 — Sunday
Tomorrow · Jul 26 From $50 San Diego Convention Center, 111 W…

Four days of maximum input produce a loose, generous, overstimulated crowd that is genuinely fun to be inside - and Sunday is the day the cosplay hits full intensity because it is the last chance. This is the version of Comic-Con that keeps people coming back year after year, once the floor has been walked and the big Hall H panels have already fired. The Exhibit Hall has deals that did not exist Thursday - publishers moving stock, creators selling what is left of their limited prints. The announcements have already happened; what remains is the experience. The Convention Center floor in late July, harbor visible through the glass, fifty thousand people who flew in from everywhere - nothing replicates it. Badges at this level do not linger. If Sunday is your entry point into SDCC, take it - it is a real day. San Diego Convention Center, July 26th. From $50 for a badge on the final day.

FilAm CreatorCon Mixer — SDCC 2026 Offsite at Pizza Kaiju
Tomorrow · Jul 26 Pizza Kaiju, 1985 National Ave Sui…

There is a room in San Diego where the stories your lola told you live alongside the panels you waited six hours to see — and on Saturday night during Comic-Con, that room opens its doors at Pizza Kaiju. FilAm CreatorCon's SDCC Mixer is a free evening gathering that brings together Filipino American creators working in comic books, film, literature, tattooing, dance, music, and every creative form in between. This is not a panel or a signing — it is a casual networking night where the Filipino American pop culture community comes together during the biggest fan convention in the world, hosted by DJ G Money and WinLove. Pizza Kaiju sits at 1985 National Avenue in Barrio Logan, a short ride from the Convention Center but a world away from the badge-gated chaos of the main floor. No Comic-Con badge is required. No cover charge. Just show up. What makes this gathering different from the dozen other SDCC parties happening the same night is specificity. This is not for fans in the abstract — it is for Filipino Americans who create, who consume, who see themselves in the work and want to be in the same room as the people making it. The artists who draw the books, the filmmakers who tell the stories, the chefs who bridge food and fandom. If that sentence describes you or someone you know, this is the room. FilAm CreatorCon has grown from a small gathering into a fixture of SDCC week, and the mixer is the most accessible entry point — no tickets, no waitlist, no badge. Come for the music, stay for the connections, leave knowing the community is bigger than you thought.

Metrocon 2026 — Florida Anime Convention, Tampa
In 6 days · Jul 31 – Aug 2 Tampa Convention Center, 333 S Fra…

Florida's anime community has been meeting at Metrocon every summer since 2002. Three days at the Tampa Convention Center — the event that built anime fandom in this state. What it feels like: Metrocon runs hot on cosplay. Florida's anime community has produced some of the country's most technically impressive costume builds, and the convention center floor is a working gallery of that craft. The programming is community-forward — panels run by fans who actually know the material, not PR-approved talking points. The Artist Alley features Southeast creators who rarely appear at national conventions, making Metrocon a genuine discovery venue for independent anime art and merchandise. Worth it? Who it is for: Metrocon is for the Florida anime fan who has been told that the real conventions are all in California. They are not. Metrocon draws 20,000 attendees to Tampa every summer and has been doing so for over 20 years. It is also worth the flight for East Coast fans looking for a convention that combines quality programming with the natural draw of Tampa in late July — the city has invested heavily in its Riverwalk and Ybor City nightlife, making the convention weekend an actual trip. What to know before you go: Badge pickup moves quickly for pre-registered attendees. The Artist Alley opens a half-hour before the main floor — use this window if you want first access to independent vendors. The cosplay contest runs Saturday evening and draws the highest-production builds; arrive early for seating. Tampa in late July is genuinely hot — plan accordingly if you are wearing anything elaborate. The cultural moment: Metrocon has been running for over two decades, which means it has watched the anime fandom transform from a niche community to the mainstream cultural force it is today. It carries that history without being precious about it — the convention feels alive in a way that older events sometimes lose. Florida has an anime community that rivals California's at the neighborhood level. Metrocon is the annual proof.

D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event
Aug 14 – Aug 16, 2026 Anaheim Convention Center, 800 W K…

Every two years, one room decides what the next two years of your imagination look like — where Disney tells the world what's coming for Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and the parks, and where the fans who care most find out first, together, before anyone. D23 is not a trade show; it's the largest gathering of Disney fans on earth. The Disney Entertainment Showcase on Friday covers film and television. The Disney Experiences Showcase on Saturday covers parks, resorts, cruise lines, and themed experiences. The Disney Legends Ceremony on Sunday honors the people who shaped the company across decades. Expect MCU Phase Six reveals, Star Wars announcements, next-generation park experiences, animation premieres, and surprises saved specifically for this room. The Anaheim Convention Center is walking distance from Disneyland, and the surrounding area fills with fan meetups, pop-up shops, and community gatherings for the full week. If you follow any Disney-adjacent fandom - animation, Marvel, parks, Star Wars - this is where the ground shifts. August 14-16 at the Anaheim Convention Center, with city-wide fan programming beginning August 8. Tickets sell in tiers: General Admission gets you the main hall, premium tiers add reserved seating and exclusive merchandise. Buy early.
