The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park 2026

The oaks at Marston Point have been standing over a hundred years, and for twenty-seven of them something has been moving through them after dark. Not a projection. Not a screen. Real people in real fog on a mile of trail you walk alone, or rather alone with whoever you grabbed by the arm when the first actor stepped out from behind a trunk you would have sworn was empty. This is San Diego's longest-running outdoor haunt, and the reason it outlasts every pop-up maze that opens and folds inside a season is the ground itself: gnarled coastal oaks, uneven dirt, actual darkness instead of a warehouse hung with black curtain. The trail feeds into the 3,500-square-foot Experiment Maze, where the ceiling drops and the walls move. Veterans go on a weeknight in early October before the lines triple. First-timers never believe it is a full mile until turning back sounds worse than going forward. Take the friend who says they are not afraid of the dark.
