What it was like
For sixty-two years, cinephiles have gathered over Labor Day Weekend in a darkened theater to watch things that don't exist on any streaming platform and probably never will.
Cinecon 62 is the longest-running classic film festival on the West Coast — five days of rare 35mm screenings, nitrate treasures, and the kind of material that archivists have spent decades preserving. This is where film historians, collectors, and obsessives sit in the same rows, arguing about whether Buster Keaton was funnier than Chaplin and what a two-strip Technicolor print looks like when it hasn't been restored yet.
September 3-7, 2026 at the Landmark Nuart Theatre, 11272 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles. Full festival pass: $349 early bird (before August 1), $399 after. Day passes: $85. Student day passes: $65 with valid ID at the door. Host hotel: Holiday Inn Express West Los Angeles, right next door to the Nuart.
This is not a nostalgia trip. This is where the people who keep cinema alive spend their Labor Day.
