The opening notes of Under the Sea land and thirty years collapse. You are on a living room carpet, the television is the entire world, and Sebastian is completely correct that everything is better down where it is wetter.

A full symphony orchestra plays it straight, which is the part that gets people — no wink, no irony, Broadway vocalists singing this material like it deserves the treatment, because it does. Hercules, A Goofy Movie, Toy Story, Newsies, Aladdin, The Lion King, Tarzan, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, The Disney Afternoon. Rock-concert lighting and animation thrown up above the harbor while the orchestra works underneath it all.

This is not a children's show. It is the soundtrack of one specific emotional era, played outdoors on the water for the adults who never stopped humming it.

The Pacific is a block away. Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 PM, the corner of Coast Highway and Pier View Way becomes the Oceanside Sunset Market — vendors, food, live music, and the light that only happens when you're that close to the water at that hour. The beach-town market that runs when the day is actually good. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, and the crowd that comes out because the evening earned it. The vendor mix is Oceanside-specific: local crafts, art, jewelry, produce, and the food vendors that the beach corridor supports. The live music stage runs throughout the evening. The Oceanside Pier is visible from the market — the setting does work the vendors don't have to. Free to attend. Parking available near the Pier. Every Thursday, May through September, 5-9 PM. Oceanside, California. The market runs through marine layer some evenings. The cooler Pacific air is part of the draw, not a reason to stay home.

A fireball crosses low enough to throw a shadow, and a few hundred people lying on desert ground gasp at the same time. The 2026 peak falls near a new moon — no lunar washout, the combination serious observers wait years for. At peak the Perseids throw 50 to 100 meteors an hour from a genuinely dark site, and Borrego Springs sits in a bowl ringed by mountains that block the light domes from San Diego and the Coachella Valley. It is a designated International Dark Sky Park, and the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Regional astronomy clubs usually set up public viewing at the peak, with telescopes for deep-sky work alongside the shower. Roughly 90 minutes from San Diego on I-8 East to SR-79 to SR-78. The visitor center at 200 Palm Canyon Dr makes a staging point; serious observers push further out. Camping on-site. Peaks August 11-13. Bring more layers than you think. The desert drops hard after midnight, and nobody who leaves early ever sees the best one.

The best organists alive do not, as a rule, pass through San Diego on a Monday night, unless somebody makes a point of dragging them here. Somebody does, every summer. The Monday series is a different animal from the Sunday afternoon concerts: it runs longer, draws a more focused audience, and features soloists who have spent whole careers on this one instrument. Each visiting organist chooses their own program, so going twice gets you two genuinely different evenings, and an instrument this strange rewards a second visit more than a first. Then there is the setting, which is half the case for going at all. The marine layer has usually burned off by evening, the amphitheater seating faces the organ facade, and Balboa Park goes quiet behind you as the light drops. It costs nothing, it requires no ticket, and most people who have lived here their whole lives have still never gone. Bring something to sit on and stay for the whole program. Then tell somebody, because that is how a thing this good survives.

A record store putting a turntable out in its own doorway is a small thing, and it is also the entire reason people drive across county lines for this. Fourth Street earned the Retro Row name honestly — vintage shops, record stores, and independent businesses stacked densely enough that the neighborhood never has to pretend to be anything. First Fridays is the night it stops pretending altogether. Galleries open. Shops stay late. Bars and restaurants push out onto the sidewalk. The crowd is exactly the mix thirty years of this has built: Long Beach lifers, vinyl collectors from the 562, and people who come down from Los Angeles because nothing up there is configured quite like this. First Friday of the month, free, late afternoon into the evening. Send it to the friend who keeps complaining that nowhere feels like anywhere anymore. Then go stand in a doorway and listen to a record with them.

Every Tuesday evening, Main Street in downtown Huntington Beach closes to cars and opens as a walking street market. Street vendors, local food, live music from rotating performers, and the particular energy of a beach town mid-week in summer when the people who live here outnumber the tourists for once. Surf City Nights runs year-round, but the summer editions have a different quality: the air is warm after dark, the pier is a ten-minute walk, and the crowd is relaxed in the way that only happens on a Tuesday night in a place where the weekend feels like it never fully ended. Free. Merchant specials from the downtown shops and restaurants that line Main. Runs 5pm to 9pm every Tuesday on Main Street from Pacific Coast Highway to 5th Street. Park in the city garage and walk. The pier at the end of Main is worth the extra five minutes.

A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into. Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel. Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside. This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up. Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach. 5 to 9:30 PM. Twenty years of writing songs about the slow dissolve of everything beautiful, and somehow the beauty keeps winning the argument. Ben Gibbard builds songs like architecture — rooms you can walk through, a staircase up to a view you were not braced for — and there is a real difference between hearing Transatlanticism alone in your car and hearing it standing among six thousand people who all drove to the same parking lot for the same reason. Nobody says it out loud. Everybody knows. Nation of Language opens, and the pairing is almost too neat: cold synth surfaces over warm hearts, the same contradiction approached from the other direction. Gallagher Square is one of the better outdoor rooms in San Diego — small enough to feel personal, open enough to let the bay in — and an August evening there is the correct weather for these songs. For everyone who ever played Plans on repeat and never told anybody why.

Comedy is best in rooms where the hosts know each other's material well enough to sabotage it mid-set, and you are sitting close enough to watch it happen. MK Paulsen and Simon Gibson run this one in Silver Lake, in the small theater beside the cafe — around a hundred seats, a stage low enough that eye contact is unavoidable and everyone in the room is complicit. The bill rotates: touring headliners passing through, LA circuit regulars roughing out material that is not ready and knows it, the occasional unannounced drop-in that makes the whole room react to a person simply walking onstage. The audience is the alt-comedy audience, which means most of them already knew who was going up before the lineup posted. Lyric Hyperion on Hyperion Ave, Tuesday nights, cheap because the room is small, with the cafe side open after. Bring the friend whose sense of humor is slightly too specific for the big clubs. They have been waiting for a room this size.

You drop your name in a bucket, and fate decides whether you read tonight — in front of two hundred strangers who showed up on a Tuesday to hear exactly that. That's the deal at the longest-running spoken-word open mic in Los Angeles. Dante Basco started it in his living room in 1998 with Ron 'Shihan' Van Clief, Devan 'Poetri' Smith, and 'Brutha' Gimmel Hooper, and Da Poetry Lounge has run every Tuesday since, now at Greenway Court Theatre on Fairfax. This is the room that produced half of LA's spoken-word generation — Saul Williams, Beau Sia, Jamie DeWolf, in their different decades. The third Tuesday of every month is the slam: same room, real stakes. The rest of the time it's open — you sign up, you wait to hear your name, and whether you kill or freeze, the room holds you either way. Doors at eight, bucket at eight-thirty, mic at nine. Five dollars for open mic, ten for slam, cash only, all ages. Some of tonight's names have already been called. Some of them haven't.

Most county fairs make you choose between the funnel cake and the view. This one sits right on the sand — the fairgrounds run along the waterfront in Ventura, so the Ferris wheel turns against the Pacific and the whole place smells like fried dough and ocean at once. It's been marking the end of Central Coast summer for over a century, and it still does it the honest way. Eleven days of the full pageantry: carnival rides and livestock barns, 4-H kids standing nervous next to their projects, pie contests, deep-fried everything, and an evening concert series on multiple stages pulling regional and national acts. The demolition derby and the rodeo round out the calendar. The food leans genuinely local — look for the avocado dishes from the Central Coast growers who are basically neighbors of the fairgrounds — and the Pacific sunset does a thing to the midway lights no inland fair can borrow. Ventura County Fairgrounds, on Harbor Boulevard in Ventura — eleven days, free parking on-site. Check venturacountyfair.org for the daily schedule and concert lineup. Come at dusk so you catch the sun going down behind the rides.

Wednesday is the evening Ocean Beach stops being a postcard and goes back to being a neighborhood. From four until eight, Newport Avenue between Cable and Bacon turns into one long conversation — past the record stores and surf shops and dive bars that have outlasted most of the vendors' youngest customers. It is a certified farmers market, so the produce is the real thing: growers, baked goods, flowers, honey, kombucha, and prepared food from people who are here every single week. The regulars are the point. You start recognizing faces around the third visit, and that is when it stops being an errand. Dogs come by default. This is OB. Newport Ave between Cable and Bacon Streets, Ocean Beach. Free street parking on the side streets. Nothing about it is remarkable, which is precisely the thing people miss after they move away.
