There is a sound that makes you homesick for a city you have never lived in. A muted trumpet over a slow walking bass, the kind of thing that stops you mid-step on a sidewalk you walk every day. Miles Davis built those rooms — rooms where you didn't speak, you listened, and when it was over you were someone slightly different than when you walked in.

The California Coast Jazz Festival brings those rooms to San Diego's bayfront for three days and sixteen concerts that chart the full arc: the 52nd Street bebop years, Birth of the Cool, the Prestige sessions, Kind of Blue, the Second Great Quintet, and the electric revolution that split audiences and made Miles grin. This is not a tribute. It is a centennial reckoning with what one person did to American music, performed by the people who played alongside him and the artists who grew up inside the wake he left.

The Wyndham Bayside Hotel sits right on the harbor. The concerts happen overlooking San Diego Bay. Between sets there are rare film screenings, panel discussions, and the kind of conversations that only happen when everyone in the room cares about the same thing. You will learn something you did not know about music you thought you understood.
