About

Every skater remembers the first board they shaped themselves — the one they built in a garage with the wrong tools, the deck that rode a little crooked but felt more theirs than anything they'd ever bought.

Skate Craft puts that entire tradition on the walls of Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park. Over 130 objects trace skateboarding's DIY lineage from the first homemade decks to the handcrafted art pieces that emerge when a culture decides it can make its own everything. Boards, gear, obstacles, the tools and machines behind them, and the repurposed boards that became sculpture when their wheels gave out.

Guest curator Mayo Mendoza — a lifelong skater who also runs the museum's facilities — organized this alongside Guusje Sanders. Grant Brittain is contributing items and presenting a slideshow on skate culture. The exhibition treats skateboard design the way craft museums treat ceramics: as objects that carry the philosophy of the people who shaped them.

November 21, 2026 – May 9, 2027. Mingei International Museum, 1439 El Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego 92101. mingei.org.
