You're standing in a ceramicist's garage in Belmont Shore, holding a cup of coffee they made on a hot plate next to the kiln, looking at a shelf of bowls that haven't been glazed yet, and the ceramicist is explaining why she fires at cone 6 instead of cone 10, and you realize you don't know what any of that means but you're staying anyway because nobody has ever talked to you about their work with this much unguarded love.

That's what the Long Beach Open Studio Tour does for four weekends every October. It unlocks the doors that are usually closed — garages, warehouses, spare bedrooms, shared studios with paint on the floor and half-finished canvases leaning against every wall — and lets you walk through them at your own pace, no gallery pretension, no admission charge, no velvet ropes between you and the thing someone made with their hands.

Each weekend spotlights a different Long Beach neighborhood: Belmont Shore opens October 3–4. Uptown follows October 10–11. Downtown goes October 17–18. Eastside closes it out October 24–25. Lawn signs with the LBOST logo mark participating studios. Maps are available online. The format is self-guided because the whole point is getting lost.
