The pumpkin weighs more than your kid. Your kid wants to carry it anyway. This is October.
Irvine Park Railroad's fall festival has been an Orange County tradition long enough that the parents bringing their children are the children who were brought here. Irvine Regional Park transforms from September through October into a harvest wonderland: hayrides through the eucalyptus groves, a not-so-spooky haunted house for the under-seven crowd, hay mazes, train rides, moon bounces, face painting, panning for gold, and a pumpkin patch where the selection runs from baseball to basketball to genuinely-too-large-to-carry.
The Great Pumpkin Weigh-Off on September 19 is where growers compete for $8,500 in prizes, and the resulting pumpkins are the kind that require a forklift and a philosophical reassessment of what a plant can do.
This is not a corporate Halloween activation. It's a park. With trains. And pumpkins. And the specific joy of watching a three-year-old try to lift something heavier than they are.
