Every Friday night from late April through October, the main drag of downtown Escondido fills with machines that were built before most of the spectators were born. Cruisin' Grand is not a car show with roped-off displays and velvet barriers. It is a rolling parade of 500-plus American-made classics, customs, muscle cars, and hot rods that idle down Grand Avenue while five thousand people line the sidewalks, lean against the storefronts, and pretend they are not staring at a 1957 Bel Air like it is a religious artifact. The restaurants along Grand set up patio seating. The ice cream shops do their best night of the week. The exhaust notes mix with the rockabilly playing from someone's tailgate. Nobody is in a hurry. That is the entire culture: the opposite of hurry. If you have ever wanted to see what Southern California car culture looks like when it is not behind a museum rope, Cruisin' Grand is the answer.
