What it was like
For thirty years, Central Avenue has been reclaiming its history one Saturday in September. The 30th Annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival on September 20 is a free, all-day celebration along the stretch of LA that was once the jazz capital of the West Coast -- where Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon, and Central Avenue Sounds defined a scene that rivaled Harlem.
The festival runs from 11 AM to 7 PM across multiple stages between Vernon Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, with live performances inside the Historic Dunbar Hotel. The lineup spans classic jazz, contemporary, funk, and soul, and the crowd is a mix of lifelong jazz heads and people discovering that this neighborhood has a story their city never taught them.
Free admission, all ages. Central Avenue between Vernon Ave and MLK Blvd, Los Angeles.
