What it was like
The altar is still warm and nobody told you how to carry this. Your throat tightens at their favorite song, the flowers haven’t wilted yet, and the world moved on without asking if you were ready.
Las Cafeteras built a whole show around that feeling. Hasta La Muerte is a two-act theatrical and musical production that walks through the stages of grief the way Día de los Muertos actually works — not as a costume holiday, but as a practice. A real one. The kind where you set a plate for someone who isn’t coming back and you laugh about the time they burned the rice and you cry in the same breath and nobody tells you to stop. The East LA band’s Afro-Mexican fusion — son jarocho roots twisted through hip-hop and cumbia and rock — turns the Epstein Family Amphitheater into the kind of room where strangers hold space for each other’s losses without saying a word.
Insider note: this is not a seated-and-polite amphitheater experience. Las Cafeteras audiences dance. They sing back. The zapateado (percussive footwork on a tarima) is participatory — they’ll pull you in. Wear shoes you can stomp in.
