Dublab27: Short Form / Long Memory

Every city has one institution that the people who love it assume everyone knows about, and are startled to learn almost nobody does. In this one it broadcasts from a room in Echo Park and has been doing it since before most of its listeners could drive. dublab turns twenty-seven. It is a non-profit freeform radio station, which in practice means the DJ is under no obligation to make sense — a set can move from Brazilian jazz to ambient drone to a field recording of somebody's grandmother without apologizing. Generations of LA producers were shaped by it, and a startling number of them will tell you the station was the first place anyone played their music. The birthday show pulls those people back into one room. Zebulon is the right size for this: a French-owned live room on Fletcher with a patio, where the crowd skews toward people who make things. Five in the afternoon until two in the morning on Saturday the twenty-sixth, over on Fletcher Drive.
