A Sunday night gig is a working musician's gig. Nobody plays Sunday for the money or the crowd size — they play it because the room lets them try things, and the people who come out on a Sunday are the ones who actually want to hear somebody try things.
The Mint opened in 1937 and has the wall of photographs to prove it. Small room, low ceiling, the kind of place where the piano is close enough that you hear the pedal. The Sam Hirsh Trio holds the Sunday residency and a rotating cast of the city's players cycle through alongside them, which means the bill changes every week and the standard does not. A residency is different from a booking: the band knows the room, the room knows the band, and by the second set they stop performing at you.
Doors at seven on Sundays. The trio goes on late, and the last set is the one worth staying for.
