Carved 2026 at Descanso Gardens — Nighttime Jack-O'-Lantern Trail

The garden closes at dusk and opens again as something else entirely. After dark, Descanso Gardens becomes a landscape of hand-carved pumpkins, thousands of them lining pathways through oak groves and camellia forests, each one glowing from within like a lantern somebody left burning for you to find. Carved is not a haunted house. It is not a scare maze. It is a walk through eight acres of living garden transformed by light, art, and the particular October quiet that settles over La Cañada Flintridge when the last of the summer heat lets go. The 2026 edition introduces sculptures by Helsinki-based artist Alexander Reichstein — his first exhibition in the United States — placed through the labyrinth where pumpkin light meets shadow. Bobolito's Rhizome piece has been repositioned into the Oak Grove, and the effect is a garden that feels like it grew this way on purpose, as if the pumpkins were always here and you just never came at the right hour. The trail takes about an hour. You will walk slowly. You will stop at the one pumpkin carved into a face that looks exactly like someone you know and you will stand there longer than you planned. That is the design. Weeknight visits are quieter and less crowded — the garden belongs to you and whoever you brought. Nightly October 2 through November 1, 6 PM to 10 PM. Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. Advance tickets required — weeknight pricing is lower than weekends. Halloween night includes a special trick-or-treat event at no extra cost.
