High on Fire

Matt Pike plays guitar like somebody trying to get through a wall and has been doing it since the early nineties across two bands that both became load-bearing for American heavy music. The riffs are fast where the genre usually drags, which is why this band picks up listeners who swear they do not like metal. Out here the room is a saloon in the high desert with a wooden floor and a ceiling low enough that the volume becomes genuinely architectural — people who have seen them in a proper venue describe this setting as a different event entirely.
