A Monday night in the high desert is not where anyone plans to end up, and that is precisely the constituency this band has served for forty years — people who wanted something loose, funny, and played well enough that the joke never becomes the point. Surf guitar, swamp rhythm, songs about fried chicken that are somehow also good songs. They have been known to throw actual food into the crowd, which sounds like a gimmick until you are in the room and a piece of it lands near you. The North Carolina origin matters less than the fact that they never chased anything; four decades of the same three people is its own argument. Pioneertown's saloon has a wood floor, a patio, and a sky worth stepping outside for between sets. Music at 9:00 PM. Monday shows out here draw the locals more than the weekenders, which is a completely different and better crowd.
