Buck Meek
Half the pleasure of a good songwriter is watching them get out from under the band that made them known, and Meek's solo records do something his other group cannot — looser, funnier, full of Texas imagery and guitar playing that wanders off mid-thought and finds its way back. He is the guitarist people quietly consider the most interesting part of that band, and alone he plays more, not less. The songs are small on purpose and reward a room where nobody is talking. A high desert saloon in December, with a fire outside and a crowd that drove out for exactly this, is close to the ideal listening condition. Music at 9:30 PM in Pioneertown, past Yucca Valley. There is a whole circuit of writers like him who pass through this room across a year, and following it is how a lot of people out here spend their winters.
