The Black Angels: Passover 2026 Tour
Certain records only work in the dark, and the first one this band made is the reigning example — a drone, a tremolo, and a drummer who refuses to speed up no matter how much the song seems to want it. Twenty years on they are the reason a whole Texas psych scene exists as a scene rather than as a handful of bands, having built the festival that gathers it every year. Live, the visuals matter as much as the volume; the projections are handled by a person who has been doing it since the beginning and the whole thing is calibrated to make a room feel bigger and slower than it is. Ventura's flat-floor hall on East Thompson Boulevard suits that better than a theater would. Music at 8:00 PM on a Monday, which is its own kind of gift — the crowd that turns out for a psych show at the start of a work week is entirely people who actually wanted to be there.
