A seven-piece band with a violin in it should not be able to tour profitably, and the fact that this one does says something about how it was built — years of playing college towns, a fanbase assembled almost entirely by people bringing friends, and a live show that treats the audience as the eighth member. The sound sits between funk, rock, and something closer to a cappella, which is where they actually started as a group at school. Live they lean into the horn and string parts rather than hiding them. Monday is a strange night for a party this size and the crowd it draws is younger and considerably more willing than a weekend room. Music at 9:00 PM in Pioneertown, out past Yucca Valley.
