Gilla Band
Guitars processed until they stop sounding like guitars, drums recorded so close they distort, and a singer delivering deadpan lists of ordinary objects until the whole thing becomes unbearable — it should be an endurance test and is instead one of the most exhilarating live acts working. The Dublin group broke up, reformed, changed their name, and kept getting more extreme. Their records are famous among engineers for sounds nobody can identify. In a room this size the volume becomes the point; people describe it afterward in terms of physical sensation rather than songs. Highland Park's upstairs Masonic lodge has the ceiling height to take it. Music at 8:00 PM at 104 N Avenue 56, a Wednesday. Shows like this get recommended person to person with a warning attached, which is usually how the best ones travel.
