A band that formed in middle school in Los Angeles and stayed together through all of it has an advantage nobody can buy — the interplay is instinctive, and the audience that grew up alongside them treats the records as a shared diary. The sound moved from bedroom psych toward something funkier and more precise without ever losing the haze. Their following is heavily Latino, heavily local, and unusually young, which makes the rooms feel different from a standard indie show; people sing along to instrumental sections.
