Charleston is not a city anyone expects a rock band to come out of, which is roughly why the one that did has such a peculiar sound — southern rock bones with gospel harmony and a willingness to be theatrical that most bands their size avoid. They have built the following almost entirely regionally and through live performance, which is why they can fill rooms in places where the records never got played. The live show is bigger than the recordings, with the harmonies doing most of the work. Out in a high desert saloon on a Saturday night, with the doors open and a patio crowd, it takes on a looseness a theater would not permit. Music at 9:30 PM in Pioneertown. Regional bands who never crossed over nationally have the most devoted audiences in music, and the rooms show it.
