Busking in an Oakland subway station taught this group to read a crowd directly, and a decade later they still play that way — walking out into the floor, no setlist, taking requests — with a live reputation that has long outrun the recordings. The music is New Orleans second-line, Bay Area soul and old-time blues, and the frontman plays trumpet and guitar and talks to the room constantly. Nobody stands still.
