2026 Kokoro Craft Show — Japanese American National Museum, Little Tokyo

The bowl your family eats out of on New Year's is chipped, and you have been meaning to replace it for four years, and every store version looks like it was made by a machine that has never eaten out of a bowl. Once a year the museum fills with makers working in a specific tradition — ceramics, textiles, woodwork, paper — where the craft carries something you cannot get from a catalogue. Kokoro means heart, and the show is named that on purpose: these are objects made by people who learned from people. Free admission, one day, ten to four. What separates it from a general craft fair is the continuity. A number of the artists here are working in forms their grandparents worked in, sometimes with their grandparents' tools, and they will tell you which is which if you ask. You will also find people who came to the tradition sideways — a potter who is not Japanese American at all but apprenticed for nine years and can explain exactly why the glaze pools the way it does. Saturday, October 10, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free. Japanese American National Museum, 100 N Central Ave, Little Tokyo.
