Fall Exhibitions Celebration

A museum at nine at night, with a drink in your hand and the galleries still unlocked, is a completely different building. It stops being homework. The courtyard has music, the rooms stay unlocked late, and the two shows being opened are retrospectives of women who spent their careers making abstraction and getting written out of the story for it - Huguette Caland and Mavis Pusey, both finally getting the wall space. The crowd at these is the actual Los Angeles art world plus everyone who follows it: studio assistants, grad students, people who came for the party and end up standing quietly in front of something. It is free, which is the whole reason it works - a free opening is the only kind where the room is not sorted by who could afford to be in it. Pusey was a Jamaican-born printmaker who built her abstraction out of demolition sites and scaffolding in New York, and almost nobody on the west coast has seen a room of it. Doors at eight, Saturday October 10.
