Monday Evening Concerts: Robert Ashley's Perfect Lives

Somebody is talking and you cannot work out whether he is explaining the world or inventing it as he goes. Ashley built Perfect Lives as an opera for television in 1983, seven half-hour episodes following two lounge musicians who drive into a Midwestern farm town and rob the bank for a single afternoon, returning the money before anyone notices it left. The plot is nearly beside the point. What carries the thing is Ashley's voice, a boneless Midwestern drawl that can turn a sentence about corn into something adjacent to scripture, laid over a keyboard part that never entirely stops. Three episodes are performed here, The Park, The Bank and The Backyard, by the ensemble Double Life with Ed Madden narrating, which means somebody else has to inhabit a delivery so particular that most listeners assumed it could never be handed on. January 25, 8 PM, Zipper Hall on South Grand.
