Magic Commander Night — ProjectCCG, Alhambra

Five in the afternoon is an odd hour to begin a card game, and the hour tells you precisely who the room is for. It is for people who finish at four, or who are students, or who run a shop two doors down and can leave it with somebody for a few hours. Garfield Avenue in Alhambra fills up early and empties early, and a Commander night that starts at five and is done by closing fits the rhythm of the San Gabriel Valley far better than a ten o'clock finish ever would. Free to sit down, which in practice means the pods are whoever walked in: a couple of teenagers, somebody's uncle, a pair of coworkers still in work shirts. Nobody is qualifying for anything. Games get abandoned mid-board because dinner happened, and that is treated as completely normal. 39 S Garfield Ave, Wednesdays from five. Eat first or eat after — the choice is the only strategy that matters here.
