What it was like
Two-Headed Giant is the one format you physically cannot show up to alone. Two players share a single life total, take turns together, and lose together. Bring nobody and you are not playing.
That is the format this Gaslamp shop keeps rotating back to on Wednesdays, between themed Commander parties — so the week you walk in you might be handed a partner you have never met and immediately have to agree with them about risk. People are surprisingly tender about it. You watch strangers develop a shorthand in about fifteen minutes, then start finishing each other's turns.
The shop runs Warhammer painting nights in the same room on Saturdays, so the tables still have the faint chemical smell of primer, and there is usually a half-finished squad of something drying on a shelf above your head while you play.
Fifth Avenue downtown, free, six o'clock, surrounded by the noise of a neighbourhood that is mostly there to drink. The card room is the quietest door on the block.
Come with the person you would actually want sharing your life total. It is more revealing than it sounds.
