Instrumental music asks something of a crowd that lyrics let you off the hook for: you have to decide for yourself what it is about. Most rooms cannot hold that kind of silence. This one can, and has for thirty years.
City of the Sun built their following busking in Washington Square Park, two guitars and a percussionist on a cajon, no microphones, nothing amplified, only whatever could carry over traffic and still make a stranger stop walking. That origin never left the music. Even plugged into a club system the arrangements are built for somebody who has not yet committed to staying, so the hooks arrive early and they arrive hard.
Watch the percussionist rather than the guitars. Half of what sounds like studio production is one man striking a wooden box with the heel of his hand, and once you have seen where the low end actually comes from you cannot unsee it for the rest of the night.
21+. Doors 7:30, music 8:30. $22-$25.
