The Amalgamated, Rough Riders, Sugar Brown
The night before Thanksgiving is the strangest social evening of the year. Everyone you went to high school with is suddenly back in town, nobody has anywhere to be in the morning, and the city refills with the people who left it.
Ten players have to fit on this stage: two guitars, upright bass, two saxophones, trumpet, trombone, keys, percussion. The Amalgamated came out of the Hi-Lites in 2007 playing traditional ska the old way, rocksteady tempos and jazz standards rather than the horn-punk the nineties left behind. They took the 2019 San Diego Music Award for best world music album, and they have shared stages with the Skatalites, Derrick Morgan, and Toots and the Maytals. The actual lineage, not a tribute to it.
Three bands, seven o'clock, El Cajon Boulevard. Ska has run as a continuous thread in this city since the eighties, and a good number of the people who kept it going will be standing near the back.
