LUCY (Cooper B. Handy)

Calling it outsider music is lazy, because the person making it knows exactly what he is doing - the songs only sound accidental. Melodies that resolve somewhere you did not expect, production that leaves in the parts most people would clean up, lyrics that are funny and then abruptly are not. The live version is looser than the records, which are already loose, and the result is a show where nobody including the performer seems entirely sure what the next twenty minutes holds. That is either the best possible night out or completely maddening, and which one it is depends on how willing you are to not be in control of it. Halloween, half seven, on El Cajon Boulevard, around $25. Soda Bar books this kind of thing more often than a city San Diego's size has any business supporting, and whatever lands on that stage the following week is usually stranger still.
