Frieze Los Angeles 2027 — Santa Monica Airport

Most people assume an international art fair is not for them, and the assumption is doing them out of one of the strangest free-ish afternoons in the city. You do not need to be able to buy anything. Nobody checks. What you get is several hundred galleries from everywhere compressing their best argument into a booth, which means you can walk twenty feet and cross from Lagos to Seoul to a painter working out of a garage in Glendale. The setting is the part that makes it specifically ours. It happens in tents on a working airport in Santa Monica, so there is light coming through fabric, small planes taxiing somewhere behind you, and the ocean a mile off. No European fair has that and it reorganises how the work reads. A canvas that would look institutional in a Basel hall looks different with that flat Pacific light on it. It is also worth knowing what the week actually is. The fair is the anchor, but the whole city rearranges itself around it: galleries across Hollywood and the east side time their openings to the same few days, which means the genuinely interesting hours are often not inside the tents at all but at whatever is happening that night in a building you have driven past a hundred times. Locals treat the fair as the excuse and the week as the event. The honest caution is that the first day skews toward people doing business and the later days are better for looking. Four days at the end of February on Airport Avenue. Go on the back half, go slowly, and plan to be tired.
