SIX60

Being the biggest band in a small country is a strange career. At home they fill stadiums and everybody's parents know the singles; three thousand miles away they play a room that holds a few hundred, and the few hundred who turn up have all travelled a long way from the same place. That is the real event here. For anybody who grew up with these songs on the radio in New Zealand, this is less a concert than a roll call, and you can watch people recognise each other's accents in the merch queue. The music itself is soul-inflected and built for singing in groups, with a lot of Maori and Pacific melodic sensibility underneath the pop structure. Expect the room to know every word and expect at least one song to turn the whole place briefly homesick. If you have a Kiwi friend who has been here for years and says they never get to be from there, send this.
