Three in the afternoon on a Sunday is an eccentric time to put on a house party, and San Diego has quietly decided it is the correct one. The weather cooperates almost every week of the year, the venue is a yard rather than a room, and the whole thing is over in time to be a functional person the next morning. That last detail is doing more work than anybody admits: a large number of people have aged out of two a.m. and not out of wanting to dance. The records are funk-leaning and bass-heavy and considerably more fun in sunlight than the genre's reputation suggests. Bring somebody who has not been out in a year. The barrier to entry at this hour is almost nothing, which is exactly why it works.
