House Party
Naming a club night something as plain as this is either a failure of imagination or total confidence, and in a converted space on East 16th Street it reads as the latter. Downtown warehouse venues have a specific quality that purpose-built clubs cannot buy: bad sightlines, concrete, a sound system installed by people who cared more about the low end than the room. What gets played is big-room and unsubtle and completely appropriate to the setting. The crowd skews young and arrives late. If your mental image of going out in Los Angeles is formed entirely by Hollywood, the industrial edge of downtown is a different city with different rules, and this is a straightforward way to find that out.
