A venue that functions as a gym during the week and a dance floor at the weekend is an extremely San Diego solution to the problem of rent, and it produces a crowd that overlaps in ways no promoter planned. Some of the people there have been inside the building at seven in the morning. The music is tech house in the afternoon, which is the friendliest possible version of it, and the setting strips away any pretence of mystique. Saturday, four o'clock, finished by evening. This is the kind of listing that looks unremarkable written down and is consistently better than it sounds, largely because nobody arrives with expectations to disappoint. Afternoon bookings also attract people who would never commit to a midnight door time, which widens the room in a way promoters rarely plan for but always notice.
