A duo who named themselves after how they felt making records at four in the morning have been at it long enough to be an institution in a scene that barely acknowledges institutions. What they do is intricate rather than merely heavy: the drops are constructed, full of small rhythmic jokes that reward anybody paying close attention, and the production is cleaner than the genre's reputation suggests. Avalon is the correct room for it, a proper old Hollywood theatre with a system installed by people who understood what would be asked of it. Crowds for this skew young and arrive in groups that have clearly been planning the night for weeks. Go late. Nothing before midnight is the part anybody will be describing afterwards, and the floor does not properly commit until then.
