Club music built out of moombahton, dembow and Jersey club rhythms sits in a gap that American dance music has never really named, which is why the people who make it end up booked everywhere and belonging nowhere. The rhythms come from Caribbean and Latin traditions, the tempo comes from hip-hop, and the construction comes from festival electronic music, and in practice it produces the most physically specific dance records anybody is making. SOMA is also worth noting: an all-ages venue in San Diego, which means the crowd is considerably younger and significantly less self-conscious than a 21-plus room, and the floor commits from the first track rather than waiting to see what everyone else does. Eight o'clock start. Go early, because at this venue early is when the room is actually full.
