What it was like
Australian techno has a reputation for being harder and less reverent than its European parent, largely because the scene grew up a very long way from anybody it needed to impress. The results are blunt: fast, metallic, built for rooms with no natural light and a system that can take it. Subtlety is not on offer and is not missed. A Friday in a Hollywood basement is the right setting, and the duo playing it have the useful quality of being more interested in the floor than in demonstrating taste, which means the set goes where the room goes rather than where a tracklist decided in advance. Arrive later than you think. Everything before midnight is the warm-up and the people who have done this before know it, which is why the first hour always looks thinner than the night deserves.
