A thousand shows is the number nobody in the audience is supposed to know about. It is a private milestone — bar rooms with four people in them, a Tuesday in a laundromat, the drive home rewriting a tag that died. Standing in a yard watching someone hit it in public is a strange and good thing to be invited to, because the person on stage is counting and you are not.
Comedy outdoors is harder than it looks. There is no ceiling to hold the laugh in, so a joke either travels across open air or it evaporates, and comics who work this series will tell you the first two minutes are spent teaching a crowd under the sky how to be a room. Quartyard is built out of shipping containers in East Village with a lawn and a beer line and dogs underfoot, which means the laughs you do get are the ones that earned it.
Six in the evening on a Friday, downtown San Diego. Every comic you have ever loved had a thousandth show that nobody filmed.

Mad House Comedy Club, 502 Horton …
Every comedian you have ever watched on a special was once standing in a room like this, holding a microphone that smelled like the last person's hand sweat, trying material that might not work on a Monday night when nobody expects to laugh. Monday Night Open Mic at the Mad House Comedy Club in downtown San Diego is where the city's comedy scene shows up to test, fail, adjust, and occasionally bring a room of strangers to tears. Free admission. The lineup changes every week because it is open — which means you might see a 10-year vet workshopping new five minutes next to someone doing their third set ever. That unpredictability is the whole point. You do not know if the next person up is going to bomb or become the best thing you see all month. Mad House is at 502 Horton Plaza in the Gaslamp Quarter. Doors at 7 PM. The only cost is whatever you drink from the bar. The room is small enough that the comedian can see your face, which is part of why the good ones love playing here.

Only in a culture that treats the luchador mask as sacred could a man build an entire comedy career without anyone ever seeing his face. He performs all of it in the mask — the act, the persona, the bows — and the room responds the way a room responds at a lucha card, not at a comedy club.
It is loud. It is filthy in the best possible way. It is unmistakably ours: the humor of the barrio and the sobremesa, the jokes your primo tells at a carne asada that you absolutely cannot repeat at work. Most of the crowd has been laughing at him alone on their phones for years, and this is the night they finally get to do it together, at volume, in a historic theater downtown.
The Balboa Theatre on Fourth Avenue in downtown San Diego.
Send it to your cousin. You both already know exactly which bit you are waiting for.

You know the moment — someone says 'yes, and' in a meeting and you feel a pulse of recognition deep in your chest. You're not just a fan of improv. You're wired for it.
ImprovCon lands at San Diego's Town & Country Resort, August 20–23, for 3.5 days of performances, workshops, panels, and community gatherings designed for performers, comedy fans, and curious newcomers alike. The lineup reads like a fever dream for anyone who's ever binged UCB clips at 2 AM: SuperShow with cast members from Superstore, TJ Jagodowski and David Pasquesi, Scott Adsit, Keiko Agena, Asian AF, Susan Messing, and dozens more.
This isn't a comedy show you simply watch. This is a convention where the walls between audience and performer dissolve by the second workshop. You'll leave knowing names, inside jokes, and at least one person who does the same warm-up game you do.
August 20–23. San Diego. The room is already laughing — you just haven't walked in yet.

Pechanga Resort Casino, 45000 Pech…
National touring comedians — the ones with Netflix specials and arena dates — end up in Temecula for one night at twenty-five dollars a ticket. There is a reason that is possible, and it is not that they are having an off year.
The showroom seats 1,200 and was built for comedy in a way most rooms are not. Sightlines stay clean from every seat. It holds enough people to generate real crowd energy without becoming a place where the performer turns into a distant figure on a screen. The casino underwrites the programming, which is how acts that would cost three times as much at a Hollywood club end up here.
Stay for the floor afterward if that is your inclination, or go straight home — the show stands entirely on its own. The restaurants are legitimately good if you are making a night of it.
Pechanga Resort Casino, 45000 Pechanga Pkwy, Temecula. Tickets start at $25, floor seating higher.
The Saturday shows sell. Do not decide on Friday.

Your parents spent thirty years building a life in a country that does not always get the joke, and now you are in a room full of people who get the joke. Not the setup. Not the premise. The joke — the one that lives in the space between two languages, between two sets of expectations, between the person your family raised and the person you became when they were not looking.
Desi Comedy Fest is the biggest South Asian comedy festival in America, and when it lands at the Hollywood Improv on November 6, the room will be full of people who have spent their whole lives translating. The lineup features top South Asian comedians performing two shows — 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM — and the material hits different when you are not the only person in the audience who grew up eating with your hands and pretending you did not.
This is not diversity programming. It is a scene a decade in the building, and the funniest rooms in America are the ones where the comedian never has to explain the culture first.
The Lab at Hollywood Improv, 8162 Melrose Ave. That same scene runs smaller rooms across the city all year.

Vidiots MUBI Microcinema, 4884 Eag…
Some weeks the fantasy is not a vacation. It is a fire lookout tower, one road in, no service, nobody who needs anything from you. Then you get there and discover the quiet is not empty - it has been waiting to hand you back everything you drove up to avoid. That is the film, and the man who wrote and directed it is the guy you know as the sweetest idiot in a police precinct sitcom. Joe Lo Truglio made a psychological horror picture about isolation and it is genuinely unsettling, which is its own small shock to anyone who only knows him from sketch comedy. He will be there in person. The MUBI Microcinema is the smaller of the two rooms here - under fifty seats, which means a director talkback in there is less a panel than a conversation. That intimacy is the entire reason to pick this over a bigger screening somewhere else. Thursday, October 15 at 7:00pm, in the small room upstairs.
