Yuki Chiba — First North American Headline Tour at Music Box San Diego
Nov 3, 2026 Music Box, 1337 India St, San Dieg…

Somewhere between city pop and shoegaze there is a room that only opens at night, and Yuki Chiba holds the key. The Japanese singer-songwriter's voice sits in the same frequency as streetlights reflecting off wet pavement — warm, a little blurred, impossible to ignore once you've noticed it. This is his first headline tour in North America, which means the room will be full of people who discovered him through playlists that autoplay at 2 AM, through anime-adjacent OSTs that hit harder than the show itself, through a friend's story that just said 'trust me.' The Music Box in Little Italy is small enough that you'll feel the bass in your chest and see the setlist taped to the monitor. This is the kind of show where the crowd is half the experience — everyone there found him the same way you did, and nobody can explain why it feels this personal. Tickets are twenty-five dollars advance, thirty at the door. Tuesday, November 3, 2026 · 8 PM · Music Box in Little Italy · 1337 India St · $25 adv / $30 door

Plini: An Unnameable Desire Tour — Music Box, San Diego
Oct 6, 2026 Music Box, 1337 India St, San Dieg…

There's a kind of guitar playing that doesn't ask you to headbang or sing along. It asks you to close your eyes and let the melody do something your playlist never quite manages — take you somewhere you haven't been yet. Plini is the reason a very specific subset of people check concert listings in cities they don't live in, just in case. The Australian instrumental progressive guitarist launches the North American leg of An Unnameable Desire right here in San Diego, with Night Verses and Portraits opening. Music Box is 705 people and a low ceiling and the kind of sound system that lets you feel the dynamics between quiet clean passages and full-band eruptions the way the recording only approximates. This is the tour opener — the first night the new material breathes in a room. If you've ever stayed up too late listening to Handmade Cities or Impulse Voices and felt something loosen behind your ribs, this is where that feeling gets a body. Music Box, 1337 India St, San Diego. Doors 7:30 PM. All ages.

Earlybirds Club Dance Party
Aug 14 – Aug 15, 2026 $15-$20 Music Box, 1337 India St, San Dieg…

The wanting never went away. What went away was your willingness to be destroyed by it — to lose an entire Tuesday to a Monday night that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time. Nobody was building the party for that person. So somebody did. Doors at nine, last call at one, aimed squarely at people who never stopped loving a good record and simply outgrew the two-in-the-morning version of loving it. The format stays loose: vinyl-only some nights, vinyl-mostly on others, occasionally a live set, always a playlist somebody actually thought about. The crowd runs largely thirties, people who learned to dance to the right records and never quit — they just moved the whole thing earlier. Music Box on a Friday is the correct room for this, a downtown space that books touring acts most other nights of the week. Cover at the door. Bring the friend who keeps announcing they are too old for this. Watch them stay till last call.

The Strike + Kids That Fly at Music Box
Aug 7, 2026 $18-$22 Music Box, 1337 India St, San Dieg…

A horn section in an indie-rock band shouldn't still feel like a small act of defiance, and yet -- and yet, when the trumpet line comes in on a Friday night, the whole room lifts. The Strike have been arriving in full five-piece configuration for ten years out of Salt Lake City, the catalog built to fill exactly this kind of night. Kids That Fly opens, and it's the right opener -- Salt Lake again, sibling band, same energy pitched at a different volume. Music Box downtown is the room for it: five hundred capacity, twenty dollars at the door. Bring the friend who dances the second the brass hits. The crowd is the Mormon-circuit indie kids who travel for shows like this plus the SD regulars who heard the trumpet line on Spotify and needed to see it live. Doors at seven, music at eight. Friday in San Diego.

House of Funk Monthly Residency
Monthly · Next Oct 8 $18-$22 Music Box, 1337 India St, San Dieg…

San Diego turned out to have room for exactly one night like this: a live band working Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone, and Earth, Wind and Fire deep cuts without apologizing for the format. House of Funk has made it a monthly residency at Music Box on Saturdays -- the same group, with rotating singers and horn players who know the catalog by heart. August 8 is the next one. Five hundred capacity, downtown, doors at eight and music at nine, twenty dollars at the door. The crowd is the SD funk faithful -- the people who own the original pressings and the people who learned the catalog from them. By Saturday night, dancing breaks out and the bar staff knows to clear space for it.

While you are looking Different scene, same night out.

Passing Strange
Every Wednesday · Next Nov 4 Pasadena Playhouse, 39 S El Molino…

You left the neighborhood to find yourself and came back fluent in a language nobody at home speaks. That ache has a soundtrack now, and it has taken almost twenty years to reach the city it was written about. Stew's rock musical follows a kid from South Central who runs to Amsterdam and Berlin chasing the real, and discovers the thing he was running from was the only honest material he had. It won the Tony for its book and became the show people quote at each other in parking lots, and somehow Los Angeles never staged it until now. Zhailon Levingston directs a live band onstage rather than tucked in a pit, so the guitar is a character with opinions. Opening night falls on a Wednesday, November 4 at 7:30pm, which Pasadena Playhouse runs as Wine Wednesday with a pour before curtain. It plays El Molino Avenue through November 29. Bring the friend who also moved away.

Anime Expo 2027 — Los Angeles Convention Center
Jul 1 – Jul 4, 2027 Los Angeles Convention Center, 120…

You will be tired in a way that feels earned. Four days, a hundred thousand people, and not one of them needs you to explain what you are talking about. The largest anime convention in North America takes the Los Angeles Convention Center over Fourth of July weekend and spills into the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton beside it. Industry panels, screening rooms, autograph sessions with voice actors and composers, concerts that sell out weeks ahead. Studios from Japan use this as their main North American announcement stage — if a sequel or adaptation is being revealed, it often happens in a room you could be standing in. The exhibit hall carries imported merchandise and collaboration exclusives that surface nowhere else on the continent. Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St. Thursday through Sunday. Badges run from top-tier early-access down to single-day passes. Book the connected hotel corridor months out. Everyone who tells you that learned it the hard way.

Oceanside Sunset Market -- Summer 2026 Thursdays
Every Thursday · Next Oct 8 Free Coast Hwy & Pier View Way, Oceansi…

The Pacific is a block away. Every Thursday evening from 5 to 9 PM, the corner of Coast Highway and Pier View Way becomes the Oceanside Sunset Market — vendors, food, live music, and the light that only happens when you're that close to the water at that hour. The beach-town market that runs when the day is actually good. Local makers, artisans, food vendors, and the crowd that comes out because the evening earned it. The vendor mix is Oceanside-specific: local crafts, art, jewelry, produce, and the food vendors that the beach corridor supports. The live music stage runs throughout the evening. The Oceanside Pier is visible from the market — the setting does work the vendors don't have to. Free to attend. Parking available near the Pier. Every Thursday, May through September, 5-9 PM. Oceanside, California. The market runs through marine layer some evenings. The cooler Pacific air is part of the draw, not a reason to stay home.

Pacific Beach Night Market
Monthly · Next Nov 4 Free Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific …

A hundred and fifty steps from the ocean, a corner of Pacific Beach turns into a block party that nobody had to organize you into. Fire pits going. Nine to twelve food vendors rotating week to week, so the thing you loved last time might be gone and the thing replacing it might be better. Live music that is genuinely local — acoustic sets, small bands, the occasional DJ. Games. A crowd of PB locals and students and people who simply wandered up from the beach still holding a towel. Past vendors have run birria tacos, banh mi, craft lemonade, Hawaiian shave ice, artisan pastries, small-batch hot sauces. A few craft sellers usually set up alongside. This is a neighborhood gathering, not a ticketed event. Free. No RSVP. You walk up. Bayard St and Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach. 5 to 9:30 PM. Bring a layer — it cools off fast after sunset, even in August.

Taste of Soul LA 2026
In 9 days · Oct 17 Free Crenshaw Blvd (Martin Luther King …

The smell reaches you before the stages do - barbecue and catfish and soul food covering a mile-plus of Crenshaw Boulevard, because every major Black-owned restaurant in South LA has a booth out here and the food is the center of the whole thing. For one Saturday in October, this stretch between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leimert Park Village becomes one of the largest street festivals in Los Angeles. More than 300,000 people move through in a single day. The format is street vendors, restaurant booths, live music stages, a car show, health screenings, and community organization presence - but it is the food and the crowd that make it. Founded by the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest Black-owned newspaper in California, it has run for over two decades and stayed a genuine community institution: multigenerational, neighborhood-rooted, and enormous. This is Leimert Park and Crenshaw at their fullest. Free to attend. Crenshaw closes to traffic for the day. The Metro K Line stops at Leimert Park Village and is the easiest way in and out. Arrive early if you want to move - by noon the crowds are deep.

This is where San Diego independent makers set up shop: handcrafted jewelry, original paintings, ceramics, leather goods, woven textiles, hand-poured candles, botanical skincare, and prints from local artists who live and work in this city every day. The market hosts live music from local musicians throughout the day. GLAM is free to attend and open to all ages. Shaded seating is available. The market runs 10 AM to 4 PM. Getting there: Located in the Gaslamp Quarter, easily accessible by trolley (Gaslamp Quarter station on the Blue and Orange line). Street parking and paid lots available on nearby blocks.
